Why does it seem like one person is yelling and the other whispering?

“Does this darkness have a name? This cruelty, this hatred. How did it find us? Did it steal into our lives or did we seek it out and embrace it? What happened to us? That we now send our children out into the world like we send young men to war, hoping for their safe return but knowing that some will be lost along the way. When did we lose our way? Consumed by the shadows, swallowed whole by the darkness. Does this darkness have a name? Is it your name?”

I can’t. I cry every time.

Don’t judge me. In relation to myself, I would love to entitle this piece of music StuckSomewhereTwoDecadesAgo or AnAttemptAtGettingOverARidiculouslyAwesomeConcert but unfortunately, the song was already given a title when it was written in the late 1990’s. You’ll figure it out.

When you think about it, this song makes no sense. At all. Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson, the writers, have bluntly admitted that. Yet, it was a platinum single, a top ten hit, and reached number 1 in ten different countries and the Billboard Top 40. Makes for an awesome case study.

Martin and Carlsson state that in writing the song they completely went off catchy hooks, flowing lyric, rhyming words, whatever sounded good to the ear. And what resulted was this musical high-fructose corn syrup. One of those infiltrating, mindlessly pleasing tunes of which you don’t really think about content or philosophy, you just hum along. I mean, MY PARENTS, products of 70’s who really had no business knowing about 90’s teen pop hits, know this pointless song from top to bottom. Say what you want about the pop music industry, but if that’s not true brilliance, I don’t know what is.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this. I had fun making it. And I swear, this will be the last you ever hear on this blog about the Backstreet Boys.

Love. Seriously. Loveeeee it.
